Liposuction – Liposculpture
Liposuction is a technique that corrects localized fat deposits (accumulations of fat) without leaving visible marks. It is performed by removing excess fat that has accumulated in specific areas of the body such as the upper limbs, abdominal region, buttocks, thighs, calves, face, and neck, and which is resistant to diet and exercise.
The success of liposuction depends on selecting the appropriate areas and the correct amount of fat to be removed in order to avoid skin laxity.
It is not a method for weight loss in obese individuals, but rather a way to improve body shape and create a more attractive contour.
It is also worth noting that, in addition to removing fat, liposuction itself may contribute to further fat loss by increasing metabolism.
An important factor affecting the final result is the skin’s elasticity—that is, how firm or loose the skin is—since liposuction removes fat but does not tighten the skin.
The Procedure of the Operation
It can be performed under either general or local anesthesia, if the amount of fat to be removed is small. All incisions made are small (3–4 mm) and, for a better aesthetic result, are placed in natural skin folds whenever possible.
After the Procedure
The patient is discharged from the clinic on the same day, wearing—depending on the area where the liposuction was performed—a special compression garment or belt for approximately one month. Any swelling usually subsides within the next 8–10 days. The patient can return to daily activities immediately while wearing the compression garment. It is recommended to avoid exercise for about one month. The final result begins to become visible after 15 days and is completed over the following months.
Liposuction is based on the observation that fat cells in the human body have an almost zero rate of multiplication; their number remains stable, and only their volume changes.
Therefore, by removing a number of fat cells, a permanent result is achieved in terms of body proportions. New body contours are created, which are maintained over time regardless of weight gain or loss. Of course, maintaining a stable body weight is essential for preserving an optimal aesthetic result.
