Breast Lift (Mastopexy): Everything You Want to Know
The modern woman, at any stage of her life, now seeks a youthful appearance and firmness of her breasts, making a breast lift one of the most popular procedures in aesthetic plastic surgery.
Breast Lift: What It Is and Which Cases It Concerns
Weight loss, fluctuations in body weight, loss of skin elasticity, gravity, pregnancies and breastfeeding, as well as the aging process, inevitably affect the shape and firmness of the breasts.
Any woman who is satisfied with the size of her breasts but experiences sagging and loss of firmness may be a candidate for a breast lift, regardless of age. The main indication for the procedure is when the nipple is located below the inframammary fold (the fold that separates the breast from the chest wall).
A breast lift, or mastopexy, aims to reshape sagging breasts, restoring the breast to its original position and the nipples to the ideal height, correcting any asymmetries and “refilling” the upper pole of the breasts. The restoration of the breast shape is performed three-dimensionally, addressing width, height, projection, and the position of the nipple.
Before the procedure: the importance of the preoperative consultation in a breast lift
Breast lift is one of the most personalized and safe aesthetic procedures. During the preoperative consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate factors such as the shape of the breast, the size and position of the areola, the quality of the skin, and, most importantly, the degree of sagging. The relationship of the nipple to the inframammary fold determines the level of sagging (mild – moderate – severe).
Based on these factors, the plastic surgeon will determine the ideal technique or combination of techniques for the patient and will create a personalized surgical plan to restore the youthful and lifted appearance of the breast.
When taking the medical history, the plastic surgeon will assess your overall health, focusing on any medications or dietary supplements you may be taking, as well as your lifestyle (including daily habits and type of work). Taking all of this into account, they will inform you about the before and after of the breast lift.
The first and most crucial step for the success of the procedure is your visit to the clinic the day before surgery, where photography and careful planning will be performed based on your needs. Any questions or concerns will be addressed so you can enter the operating room without stress, with calm and confidence, and actively participate in shaping the final result together with the plastic surgeon.
On the morning of the surgery, upon entering the clinic, you will undergo the necessary preoperative assessment, which ensures a safer operation and faster recovery. You will then be transferred in special attire to the operating room, where the anesthesiologist will be ready for you.
The procedure of the operation: how is a breast lift performed?
Modern breast lift is not simply the removal of excess skin. Beyond removing the surplus skin, the internal structure of the breasts is reshaped—through careful preoperative planning and always respecting the tissues—while the nipples are elevated to a new position.
In cases of mild to moderate sagging, the periareolar lift technique is chosen, meaning an incision around the nipple (donut lift). In this method, the entire breast is mobilized, and with special suturing, its projection is lifted upward. A specific suture is then used to provide long-lasting support. This technique can also be effective in reducing the size of the areola.
For very significant sagging, the breast lift is performed using the same incisions as in breast reduction. The most advanced technique I employ is mastopexy with only two incisions: one around the areola and a vertical one (lollipop lift). Even in these cases, large horizontal “anchor” scars—common in older techniques that extended across the chest and anterior axillary line—are avoided. Modern breast lift techniques ensure a breast proportionate to a woman’s body type (height, weight, chest width, etc.), offering a natural look with long-lasting results.
What is breast lift without implants?
In women with breasts of satisfactory size but sagging and “empty” in the upper pole, the breast lift technique with auto-implants is applied. Beyond removing the loose skin, a vertical lift is performed to internally restructure the breasts so that the part responsible for the sagging is utilized and pushed upward like an internal implant (autologous implant), while the nipples are simultaneously repositioned in the ideal location.
Therefore, with a natural breast lift, the sagging internal breast is reconstructed into a lifted, firm, and compact breast, as in adolescence, without the use of foreign materials (implants), minimizing incisions and achieving long-lasting aesthetic results.
When is a breast lift combined with breast augmentation?
When, along with significant sagging, the breast volume is less than desired, a breast lift is combined with breast augmentation during the same procedure.
The breast becomes firm, “full,” and youthful using either silicone implants or autologous fat grafting (fat transfer). In the first case, high-quality silicone implants from certified companies with a lifetime integrity guarantee are placed via vertical mastopexy, while the nipple–areola complex is repositioned higher. In the second case, fat from the patient’s own body is harvested through liposuction from unwanted areas and injected into the breast after special processing.
To correct even the smallest aesthetic imperfection, a combination of both breast augmentation techniques—implants and autologous fat injection—is performed, providing even more natural, long-lasting results and an impressive décolletage.
How long does a breast lift procedure take, and what type of anesthesia is required?
The duration of the surgery depends on the technique or combination of techniques used and ranges from 1 to 3 hours. A breast lift is performed in all cases under general anesthesia in a fully equipped medical facility that meets safety and healthcare quality standards.
How is the recovery after a breast lift?
In most cases, an overnight stay at the clinic is not required, and the woman goes home the same day with personalized postoperative instructions for a smooth and quick recovery. For about a month, she will need to wear a special elastic sports-type bra, which will help achieve the desired aesthetic result.
After the surgery, mild swelling and possibly some bruising may occur, which subside within 10–15 days. Postoperative pain is minimal—and any discomfort can be effectively managed with simple painkillers—or may be entirely absent.
Return to daily activities and light work is possible after the first 5 days. However, for one month, activities such as intense physical exercise, lifting heavy objects, and sexual activity should be avoided to minimize the risk of injury.
What does the advancement of technology offer in breast lift surgery?
The use of state-of-the-art surgical instruments, new types of sutures, next-generation silicone implants, and innovative pharmaceutical products for skin regeneration ensures women greater safety, highly precise surgery, faster recovery, and, most importantly, an excellent aesthetic and functional outcome.
Is breastfeeding possible in the event of a pregnancy after the surgery?
A properly performed breast lift ensures the woman can breastfeed—even in cases combined with silicone implants—since the milk ducts remain intact. On the other hand, the changes that occur in the breasts during pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the results of the breast lift. Therefore, if a woman plans to become a mother, it is advisable to undergo the procedure after completing her family to avoid a new sagging of the breasts in a short period.
Are the results of a breast lift permanent?
The aesthetic results of the procedure last for many years. However, a breast lift cannot stop the natural aging process, nor can it prevent the effects of gravity, a possible pregnancy, or fluctuations in body weight, which may cause the breasts to sag again. Maintaining a healthy, stable body weight and a healthy lifestyle are the “keys” to the long-lasting results of a breast lift.
Does a breast lift leave scars?
All surgeries that involve incisions inevitably result in some form of scarring. Modern techniques have minimized the size and visibility of these incisions, as they are strategically placed in natural folds of the breast and in areas hidden by most bras and swimsuits, reducing the procedure’s mark.
Postoperative care plays an important role in the quick healing and final appearance of the scars, which is why your plastic surgeon will provide detailed guidance on caring for the operated area after the procedure. The incisions fade significantly after 6–8 months, and after a year they become virtually imperceptible.
My experience as a plastic surgeon shows that the increased postoperative satisfaction of women, who improve their quality of life through a breast lift, eliminates any preoperative concerns they had about the procedure’s scars.
How much does a breast lift cost?
“‘Breast lift prices’: one of the main concerns of women who wish to restore the firm, youthful appearance of their breasts.
Each case is unique and requires a personalized surgical plan. Factors that determine the cost of a breast lift include the technique used, the extent and complexity of the problem, the cost of the surgery, the duration of hospitalization, the combination of the lift with another procedure (e.g., breast augmentation or another area of the body, such as a tummy tuck as part of a mommy makeover), and the quality of materials (e.g., in cases where silicone implants are used).
After a detailed preoperative evaluation, the plastic surgeon will be able to provide you with an accurate cost estimate based on your specific goals and needs.
It is important to remember that the cost of a breast lift—as with any other aesthetic procedure—should not be the only deciding factor. Safety, the surgeon’s experience, and achieving the desired result should all play a key role in your decision-making process.”
Can I achieve a breast lift with exercises or cream?
Unfortunately, this is not the case. While some creams may improve skin elasticity by stimulating collagen production or provide a very mild degree of skin tightening, they are not sufficient to naturally lift the breasts. Likewise, there is no “magic” workout program that can lift sagging breasts. Chest exercises only strengthen the pectoral muscles, enhancing muscle tone and making the chest appear firmer, but they do not reposition or reshape the breasts.
Therefore, no non-surgical option can offer significant, long-lasting improvements in the position, size, and symmetry of the breasts like a breast lift surgery can.
